How Botox treats hyperhidrosis

Botulinum toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine from the sweat glands, using the same mechanisms that treat wrinkles but applied to the skin glands. Perspiration is reduced by 80 to 90 % in the treated area, without risk for thermoregulation (other areas of the body continue to sweat normally).

This treatment is indicated as soon as conventional deodorants are no longer sufficient. It can be covered by the Sickness Insurance in case of severe documented axillary hyperhidrosis.

Botox axillary hypersudation perspiration treatment · Dr Marianne Cayatte · Montpellier

Who is this treatment for?

Hyperhidrosis differs from normal perspiration: it occurs independently of heat or physical exertion. People who suffer from it describe aureoles under their arms, persistent stains on clothing, odors that are difficult to control despite careful hygiene, and significant psychological repercussions (gone in assembly, complexes, social avoidance). It can be primary, without apparent cause and often of nervous or hormonal origin, or secondary to a pathology that Dr.Cayatte is looking for during the consultation.

This treatment is indicated to all people with excessive sweating.

Men and women, from the age of 18, can benefit from this act.

However, precautions are taken:

Avoid in pregnant or breast-feeding women and patients with certain autoimmune neuromuscular diseases.

Process of treatment: a medical process framed

Botulinum toxin injection treatment at armpit level is a medical procedure requiring a first mandatory consultation.

During this consultation, Dr. Marianne Cayatte evaluates your indication for treatment, explains the protocol and details the precautions to be taken before and after the act, and answers all your questions.

At the end of the consultation, you will be given a precise and personalized estimate.

If you decide to proceed with the treatment, the doctor will perform approximately 10-20 micro injections per armpit after careful identification of the area to be treated.

Prior disinfection of the area ensures an antiseptic procedure. In general, one bottle of Botulinum Toxine is used, one per armpit.

The injections, not painful, are well tolerated by our patients.

Botulinum Toxine works by controlling the skin out of sweating, providing relief felt after a few days and persistent between 6 and 9 months.

It is recommended that treatment be renewed annually, at most for the first two years, to potentiate long-term effects.

An injection may also be considered on an ad hoc basis before a particular event (marriage, professional presentation, sporting event). In this case, it is advisable to schedule it at least 2 to 4 weeks prior to the scheduled date, so that the effects are fully active.

Treatment safety: expertise and clinical regression

In France, the use of botulinum toxin in medicine dates back to the 1990s and has been for aesthetic purposes since 2003.

With nearly 20 years of decline and minimal doses, the botulinum toxin used in aesthetic medicine poses no significant risk to patients.

Although side effects may occur, they are rare and generally reversible.

Dr. Marianne Cayatte, with her expertise and experience, administers this treatment with the necessary precautions.

Blocking sweat at armpit level is safe, as the body can always sweat in other places to regulate body temperature.

In addition, the self-resorbable property of botulinum toxin ensures that perspiration will gradually resume within 6 months of the session.
